Japan has always been well known for fantastic quality instruments and with them being so close, it is always good to take advantage of this. As an aside, remember that soon all imports (even under $1000) will be hit with an overseas sales tax when buying, so if you are looking at a bigger ticket item like a guitar, make sure that you get in soon!

- [Buying from Japan](https://australianguitarreview.com/buying-from-japan/): The Japanese are known to have great quality guitars and have, until recently, been a supplier to the Australian market for Fender in particular. However, they tend to build only for their local market these days and it is relatively rare to find them here in Australia - except on a limited run here and there.
- [John Mayer PRS Silver Sky](https://australianguitarreview.com/john-mayer-prs-silver-sky/): The talk of the week has been this guitar by PRS and it's similarities to a Fender Stratocaster. The story goes that John Mayer was unhappy with his relationship with Fender and as a result went to PRS (or was approached by them) to create a new guitar that fit his specifications. The thing is, that this thing looks a lot like a Fender Strat - but with a PRS price tag.
- [Buying Mooer on Aliexpress](https://australianguitarreview.com/buying-mooer-on-aliexpress/): Much like Joyo, which can be bought through Artist Guitars, the Mooer brand of pedals treads the line between affordable and quality. You can buy these pedals through local retailers, however, much like with everything in Australia you will pay for pretty much every part of the distribution line, so an alternative is to purchase through a seller such as AliExpress.
- [Joyo Power Supply](https://australianguitarreview.com/joyo-power-supply/): I was starting a secondary pedal board and was looking for a new supply for it. Unfortunately, power can be pretty expensive if you are looking at the totally isolated versions, but what if you are looking for a good low price, second-board power supply? Well, look no further than the Joyo Power Supply JP02 that you can purchase from Artist Guitars. The supply comes with 8x 9v outputs, 1x 12v and an 18v output.  It comes with everything that you need, including power leads and wall wart in a bulletproof steel case. The unit also has blue LEDs on each of the outputs, which can be a bit annoying, but who knows you might need your board lit up a bit more at night, regardless these LEDs can be switched off easily.
- [NAMM Releases 2018](https://australianguitarreview.com/namm-releases-2018/): Chase Bliss - known for taking their time to make awesome pedals, Chase Bliss released not one, but two new pedals - The Thermae (an analogue delay and harmoniser) and the Condor (a multi-effect including EQ, Drive, Boost and Tremolo).
- [NAMM Releases  – JHS Bonsai](https://australianguitarreview.com/namm-releases-jhs-bonsai/): Another of the great releases that have been announced this week is the JHS Bonsai - a 'all tubescreamers in a box' pedal that is sure to turn some heads. This pedal is much along the lines of their previous Muffuletta which included the most widely used and loved Big Muffs and their variants. They look to be retailing for around $230 US, so expect them close to $400 when they hit Australian shelves.
- [Release news – Op Amp Big Muff](https://australianguitarreview.com/release-news-op-amp-bi-muff/): ElectroHarmonix are finishing the year the way they started it, with continued awesome releases. Earlier in the year it was the Green Russian reissue and now they have released the Op-Amp version of the Muff. This is the Muff of the Smashing Pumpkins sound and who better to tell you about it than Billy Corgan himself. Unfortunately, I see a lot of brands try to be too boutique and sell their fuzz or gain circuits into the hundreds of dollars, but not Kink - for a great, hand built pedal you are looking at the sub $200 mark for even the most complicated of their designs. It seems to be working too, every time that Mark puts up a batch of his pedals, it seems that they well out within the week. 
- [Featured Builder – Dr Scientist](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-dr-scientist/): Ryan says that they are "cooking up two new products right now that we're really excited about.. one is a new reverb pedal since we had to retire the Reverberator last year.  I really miss having a dedicated reverb pedal in our line and we're working on a really fun replacement, something more weird and complicated and powerful.  We're also working on a new kind of expression pedal that's fun to play with.  I'm not sure if we'll finish either for 2017 but 2018 for sure!" Great to see that they are continuing to break new ground, I am especially interested in the new expressions pedal and see what that is all about. - [Artist Guitars Stratocaster review](https://australianguitarreview.com/artist-guitars-stratocaster-review/): After reviewing the Artist ES 335 and loving the quality build, I thought that I should give another of theirs a try to make sure that it wasn't a fluke. So I decided to pick a guitar that every beginner will probably want to at least consider and picked up the Artist AS20 Strat. Now this site was created to look at what we can buy here in Australia, that is quality and that is actually available, so I thought the Artist range was a great place to start. This post also forms a bigger picture of affordable gear for beginners (and/or experimenters). So without further ado, here is my opinion on this guitar.

- [EHX Green Russian Re-issue](https://australianguitarreview.com/ehx-green-russian-re-issue/): The EHX Big Muff Pi is a pedal that has probably been on most pedal boards, from the beginner to the advanced it has been a staple. Most people will also know that there have been several iterations of the pedal with a particular few hailing from Russia. The Black and, particularly Green Russian muffs have been sought after for their tonal ability - often a bit smoother than the NYC Pi. However, with many people wanting them and them being relatively limited they have become a bit of a collector's item. On Reverb you will be lucky to find a Green Russian at anything under $500, so it has come as welcome news that the Green Russian is being reissued, but in a smaller housing. There will be some differences, like the fact that they won't have traditional Russian transistors in them, but we are assured that this is a re-creation of the original. US street price is $80.60, so after import duties and exchange rate, I am assuming that these units will be around the same price as the Nano Big Muff Pi at $160.

I bought the Boss Katana 50 Watt, if you want one of these I would suggest that you get in quick as they are in very high demand at the moment and more than likely you will be placed on a wait list for a little while until more stock comes in..But they are definitely worth it.

- [EHX Nano 360 Looper Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/ehx-nano-360-looper-review/): I was going to be influenced by the most popular sellers of last year and buy the TC Electronics Ditto Looper, but there was a few things that threw me off, most notably that I couldn't save loops between playing sessions. The EHX 360 Looper, however, allowed me to do that. The 360 stands for the fact that this looper has 360 secs of looping capacity across 11 slots. That means that you can have 11 x 36 sec loops or 1 x 360 sec loop or anything in between.
- [Guitar Gods – Nick Reinhart](https://australianguitarreview.com/guitar-gods-nick-reinhart/): This new series is going to start to look at some of the great guitarists of the modern era, especially those that are a little less well known. Stringjoy is a company that I have heard about a lot recently through the 60 cycle Hum podcast and through Instagram posts, and I thought that I would get in contact. Now, a lot of buyers tend to look for the USA made products, which usually come with the extra quality that the extra checks and balances buys, whether it be a Gibson Les Paul, a Fender MIA strat, or an original NYC Muff. This is where Stringjoy fits in, an American builder in the USA, with all the quality that you can assume comes with that. Scott from Stringjoy was kind enough to answer some questions that I had about his products.
- [TC Electronics new range](https://australianguitarreview.com/tc-electronics-new-range/): In an industry where we are usually drip fed new products by companies TC Electronics have gone way out and released a whole series of new pedals just in time for some summer gear buying. The Smorgasboard of Tones has been announced (and released) and contains some really cool looking pedals - including an analog delay. From what I can tell, the pedals have been released in the UK and US so far (available on Andertons) but still to get details on when they will be available in Australia. TC are known for their great quality pedals and it seems that, with these pedals, they are trying to fill the gap that sits between cheap Chinese knock offs and clones and the regular priced BOSS/EHX/TC models. Given this, if they are of similar quality I can imagine that they will be landing on a of pedal boards in coming years as standard, especially for new players that don't want super cheap, but quality pedals.
- [Featured Builder – Anarchy Audio](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-anarchy-audio/): It’s time for us to look at another of the awesome Australian builders, last time it was Ormsby Guitars, so this time we are looking at effects - particularly Anarchy Audio. I had the opportunity to do an email interview with Johannes from Anarchy on his thoughts on the industry and how he got started. The Australian industry is such a small one and I saw that Anarchy has a lot to do with Ormsby.
- [How to buy a guitar without knowing how to play](https://australianguitarreview.com/how-to-buy-a-guitar-without-knowing-how-to-play/): It's a common story - you want to learn how to play guitar but when you think about going into the store to try out anything it fills you with dread. What will people think of you if you go into a guitar shop and don't know how to play at all? I am making the assumption that you don't have access to playing others' guitars and that you are new to music playing.
- [Building your first pedal board](https://australianguitarreview.com/building-your-first-pedal-board/): So you have bought your first guitar and amp and now you are looking for a few more ways to change and improve your playing. The next step is obviously pedals! Some people will recommend playing without pedals for the first year, until you are really comfortable with the fret board, timing and your guitar in general, but where is the fun in that? Seriously, if you are passionate about playing and you want to be getting the same tones as some of your favourite players, you will need some pedals to get you there. We have previously looked at where to buy your pedals on the site. I would recommend that you look at second hand pedals as well, brands like Boss are very well known for being built like a tank. Most pedals are made for stomping on stage, so they are likely to stand up to a bit of use before they give in.
- [Featured Builder – Ormsby Guitars](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-ormsby-guitars/): Ormsby Guitars is one of the very few Australian owned and built electric guitars. Given, Australia does have a few makers when it comes to the acoustic side of things, but on the electric side there are very few. This website was created to both support and explore the Australian guitar buying, building and repairing industry, so I thought that Ormsby would be one of the best places to start. If you have any further suggestions of other companies that we should cover, please let us know in the comments.
- [Fender Offsets NAMM 2016](https://australianguitarreview.com/fender-offsets-namm-2016/): I thought that it would only be fair to look at the new range that Fender will be releasing, considering that we have previously looked at the 2017 Gibson models. The new models come in the Duo - Sonic and the Mustang and from the video above come in a whole series of configurations, from splittable humbuckers to P90s. There are some cool new colours as well, with the Olive green, Orange and what looks like a washed out Seafoam Green. They are all shorter scale guitars, which are a bit of a drawback for me, although that is just a personal opinion, I find that the shortened scale can be a little cramped. It looks like these guitars will also be quite reasonably priced (maybe <$1000AUD), but it is always a waiting game, along with when they will actually hit Australian shelves.
