After recent chats with great local and local-ish makers like Mr Glyn's Pickups and Tonecat Pedals, this week I am catching up with the owner of PJD Guitars, Leigh Dovey. While they have spent years building guitars over in the UK, the launch of their new Origin Series is making big waves for players everywhere—including right here in Australia. - [The Best Guitars for Absolute Beginners: An Australian Guide to Your First Six-String](https://australianguitarreview.com/the-best-guitars-for-absolute-beginners-an-australian-guide-to-your-first-six-string/): "What's the best guitar to start learning on?" Whether you're eyeing up an acoustic for campfire sessions or dreaming of shredding on an electric, choosing your first guitar can make or break your musical journey. - [The Bunnings Budget Dust Cyclone Separator](https://australianguitarreview.com/the-bunnings-budget-dust-cyclone-separator/): I went camping a few weeks back and my small workshop is also partly my storage shed for the camp gear. Dust had settled everywhere, in camp chairs, nooks and crannies and just anywhere that it could. Unfortunately, my solution of 'just sweep regularly' isn't exactly the best way of keeping dust down and with it coming into winter here, there is going to be a lot more time spent inside the shed working, rather than taking the tools into the yard. So I needed a cheap and easy dust removal setup. - [5 Best Practice Amps for Electric Guitar (Australia 2026).](https://australianguitarreview.com/the-best-electric-guitar-amps-for-practicing-australia-2026/): Finding the best practice amps for your home setup doesn't have to be difficult, so I put a little guide together about some great options that are out there. - [Artist Guitars Cherry58 Review (2026): Best Budget ES-335-Style Guitar in Australia](https://australianguitarreview.com/artist-guitars-review-cherry58-semi/): Hands-on review of the Artist Guitars Cherry58 (2026). See why this $349 semi-hollow is Australia’s best budget ES-335-style guitar for blues and classic rock. - [Chasing the Fuzz Dragon – Wyong Road Electronics](https://australianguitarreview.com/chasing-the-fuzz-dragon-wyong-road-electronics/): I've had a little break from the website due to illness/travel/work, but it's good to be back and getting some profiles done for some great Australian and International builders. Make sure to check out some of the recent ones (Mr Tonecat of Tonecat Pedals, GalahcoreFX, Mr Glyn’s Pickups - [Best Budget Electric Guitars Australia 2026](https://australianguitarreview.com/best-budget-electric-guitars-australia-2026/): Buying a budget electric guitar can be an absolute stress. With the amount of models and an ever increasing push from 'fast fashion' instrument makers, it can be hard for the novice guitarist to make a decision on what they may like to buy and what suits them. So I figured that I would put together a guide of what I see are some of the Best Budget Electric Guitars in Australia as of 2025. - [GalahcoreFX Feature Builder](https://australianguitarreview.com/galahcorefx-feature-builder/): I've been looking at local builders of late and doing some profiles to help shine a light on the Australian guitar and gear industry. So far we have looked at Mr Glyn's Pickups and Tonecat Pedals and this week we are looking at a proper Galah - namely GalahcoreFX and I'm speaking with owner, Paul. - [Mr Tonecat of Tonecat Pedals](https://australianguitarreview.com/mr-tonecat-of-tonecat-pedals/): Last week I spoke with Glyn of Mr Glyn's Pickups and this week I am having a chat with Ryan (aka Mr Tonecat) of Tonecat Pedals to trace how a doodled badge on a retro cab morphed into a fledgling pedal-making venture. - [Mr Glyn’s Pickups](https://australianguitarreview.com/mr-glyns-pickups/): I caught up with Glyn of Mr Glyn’s Pickups to trace the path from guitar-repair bench to boutique-pickup maker, and to learn what makes his New Zealand–born designs so special. - [Building First Guitar – From Block to Blank](https://australianguitarreview.com/building-first-guitar-from-block-to-blank/): This is the second piece in my first guitar build - the first being here. - [Building my first Guitar from scratch](https://australianguitarreview.com/building-my-first-guitar-from-scratch/): There has always been a part of me that wanted to build a guitar but I have never had the confidence to do so and the pull of a busy job also kept me away from considering it. But I figured that 'why not' and have started to build a Tele style guitar from scratch. - [How I review music for Australian Guitar review](https://australianguitarreview.com/how-i-review-music-for-australian-guitar-review/): I am just a guy who loves music, so I review it on my Instagram page and here on the website, but I wanted to be a bit clear on how I score things, my likes and dislikes and everything in between. - [Stories in Wood – The Axe Guitar Stand](https://australianguitarreview.com/stories-in-wood-the-axe-guitar-stand/): If you're seeking a guitar stand that seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetics, look no further than the handcrafted wooden guitar stands from Stories In Wood. Based in Melbourne, this small Australian business has garnered attention for its meticulous craftsmanship and commitment to quality. Liam, from the company reached out to me recently with their range. - [Artist Guitars TC59 Telecaster review](https://australianguitarreview.com/artist-guitars-tc59-telecaster-review/): The Artist TC59, a telecaster-style guitar by Australian company Artist Guitars, combines vintage aesthetics with modern versatility at an affordable price (this guitar is no longer available on their website - but check out my new recommendation here) - [Should I buy a Positive Grid Spark?](https://australianguitarreview.com/should-i-buy-a-positive-grid-spark/): I was looking for a small amp with built in effects for travelling and for readily moving around the house, so the Positive Grid range came up on my radar pretty quickly. I eventually settled for the Spark Mini at the end of last year and have had some time to sit with it. So what have I found great about this amp? - [Live Music Review – Doom’s Children – The Tivoli, Brisbane.](https://australianguitarreview.com/live-music-review-dooms-children-the-tivoli-brisbane/): I haven't been to see live music in a while and holy shit was it a revelation when I returned. - [Guitar Pedal alternatives at Amazon](https://australianguitarreview.com/guitar-pedal-alternatives-at-amazon/): There are plenty of great pedals out there, but sometimes you want something to experiment with, or you don't have the cash at the moment, or a thousand other reasons. Here are some great brand alternative pedals that you can pick up on Amazon. - [Donner Pedals Australia](https://australianguitarreview.com/donner-pedals-australia/): Donner Pedals have properly hit our shores now with their online store at Donner Music. In the past they have definitely been available from a lot of places, however we seemed to be constantly paying the Australia tax. These pedals that people in the States were calling 'budget' were often priced at almost $100. - [What’s new at Artist Guitars](https://australianguitarreview.com/whats-new-at-artist-guitars/): I've been out of the scene a bit recently, COVID has been a major hit on my down time and ability to get to posting. I have been noticing though that Artist Guitars have been releasing some great stuff over the last little while. So here are the things that I am looking forward to: - [Artist Guitars TC59 review update](https://australianguitarreview.com/artist-guitars-tc59-review-update/): I just wanted to revisit the review that I gave to the Artist TC59 a few years back especially to look at the quality of company that Artist Guitars are and where they are at right now. Just to recap the review, I think that the Artist TC59 is one of the best pieces of gear that you can get for a budget. The Quality Assurance is top notch and you are going to get a lot more bang for your buck from this than you would from an entry level Squier. - [Joyo Atmosphere Reverb Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/joyo-atmosphere-reverb-review/): I have been looking for the ideal Reverb for my playing and have gone through a few of late. The EHX Ocean's 11 was a little too much reverb for my liking and the Matthews Astronomer was a little too specifically shimmery for me. I'm not a massive user of reverb and just wanted something that would do the job for a little bit of ambiance and maybe a bit of weird stuff along the way. - [Affordable Overdrive Pedals – Australia](https://australianguitarreview.com/affordable-overdrive-pedals-australia/): Joyo Ultimate Drive - you may have heard of the OCD, a classic overdrive pedal that may people have on their boards. However, it comes with a high price and some issues with customer service.. The Ultimate Drive is almost a perfect replica of the OCD with a tiny price point. You will can pick this one up for around $60 - [Great affordable reverb pedals](https://australianguitarreview.com/great-affordable-reverb-pedals/): Reverb is somewhat of a necessity for many boards, it adds that extra little oomph to your sound and makes you sound bigger (and maybe even better) than you are. So being such a necessity, why the hell are so many recommendations for pedals that are over $350? I thought it would be good to look at some pedals that fit a budget range and are affordable to more people. - [2020 News](https://australianguitarreview.com/2020-news/): We are back! - [Welcome to the Future of WordPress with Gutenberg](https://australianguitarreview.com/welcome-to-the-future-of-wordpress-with-gutenberg/): Malesuada fames ac turpis egestas integer. I will be adding to this post as new deals come in, so feel free to comment anything below that you might want to share. - [Artist Guitars ST62 Quick Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/artist-guitars-st62-review/): So we have reviewed a few of the Artist range of guitars here previously due to their affordability and quality, so I was pretty interested when they released the new ST62, a signature stratocaster. I received this guitar last week from Artist, with super quick shipping as per normal from them and taking it out of the box I was blown away. - [Spotlight – Tokai Japan](https://australianguitarreview.com/spotlight-tokai-japan/): I was lucky enough to get on to a representative, Kosuke Ban,  from Tokai Guitars recently about their brand the guitars that they are currently making. Japan has always been well known for fantastic quality instruments and with them being so close, it is always good to take advantage of this. As an aside, remember that soon all imports (even under $1000) will be hit with an overseas sales tax when buying, so if you are looking at a bigger ticket item like a guitar, make sure that you get in soon! - [Walrus Audio Luminary Octave Generator](https://australianguitarreview.com/walrus-audio-luminary-octave-generator/): After what seems like all their other pedals getting an update, Walrus Audio have just released information on their updated Version 2 of the Luminary. - [Buying from Japan](https://australianguitarreview.com/buying-from-japan/): The Japanese are known to have great quality guitars and have, until recently, been a supplier to the Australian market for Fender in particular. However, they tend to build only for their local market these days and it is relatively rare to find them here in Australia - except on a limited run here and there. - [John Mayer PRS Silver Sky](https://australianguitarreview.com/john-mayer-prs-silver-sky/): The talk of the week has been this guitar by PRS and it's similarities to a Fender Stratocaster. The story goes that John Mayer was unhappy with his relationship with Fender and as a result went to PRS (or was approached by them) to create a new guitar that fit his specifications. The thing is, that this thing looks a lot like a Fender Strat - but with a PRS price tag. - [Buying Mooer on Aliexpress](https://australianguitarreview.com/buying-mooer-on-aliexpress/): Much like Joyo, which can be bought through Artist Guitars, the Mooer brand of pedals treads the line between affordable and quality. You can buy these pedals through local retailers, however, much like with everything in Australia you will pay for pretty much every part of the distribution line, so an alternative is to purchase through a seller such as AliExpress. - [Joyo Power Supply](https://australianguitarreview.com/joyo-power-supply/): I was starting a secondary pedal board and was looking for a new supply for it. Unfortunately, power can be pretty expensive if you are looking at the totally isolated versions, but what if you are looking for a good low price, second-board power supply? Well, look no further than the Joyo Power Supply JP02 that you can purchase from Artist Guitars. The supply comes with 8x 9v outputs, 1x 12v and an 18v output.  It comes with everything that you need, including power leads and wall wart in a bulletproof steel case. The unit also has blue LEDs on each of the outputs, which can be a bit annoying, but who knows you might need your board lit up a bit more at night, regardless these LEDs can be switched off easily. - [NAMM Releases 2018](https://australianguitarreview.com/namm-releases-2018/): Chase Bliss - known for taking their time to make awesome pedals, Chase Bliss released not one, but two new pedals - The Thermae (an analogue delay and harmoniser) and the Condor (a multi-effect including EQ, Drive, Boost and Tremolo). - [NAMM Releases – JHS Bonsai](https://australianguitarreview.com/namm-releases-jhs-bonsai/): Another of the great releases that have been announced this week is the JHS Bonsai - a 'all tubescreamers in a box' pedal that is sure to turn some heads. This pedal is much along the lines of their previous Muffuletta which included the most widely used and loved Big Muffs and their variants. They look to be retailing for around $230 US, so expect them close to $400 when they hit Australian shelves. - [Release news – Op Amp Big Muff](https://australianguitarreview.com/release-news-op-amp-bi-muff/): ElectroHarmonix are finishing the year the way they started it, with continued awesome releases. Earlier in the year it was the Green Russian reissue and now they have released the Op-Amp version of the Muff. This is the Muff of the Smashing Pumpkins sound and who better to tell you about it than Billy Corgan himself. Great piece above by Reverb on the release and the history of the sound with the Pumpkins. - [Pedal Winners of 2017](https://australianguitarreview.com/pedal-winners-of-2017/): Initially the article was going to be 'Best Guitar gear of 2017' but due to the amount and quality of releases this year the article would have dragged on and on, so I decided to split it - today looking at the best of pedals this year that we have either purchased or reviewed. - [Best guitar gear of 2017](https://australianguitarreview.com/best-guitar-gear-of-2017/): It's been a big year as always for guitar and related gear so we have attempted to round up some of the best of the gear we have reviewed and new releases that we have seen across the year. Let us know what you think below and what your favourite gear has been this year. - [Best selling pedals of 2017](https://australianguitarreview.com/best-selling-pedals-of-2017/): Reverb.com have released their best selling pedals over the last year and you can find it here and there are the usual suspects on there. - [Christmas gift ideas for Guitarists](https://australianguitarreview.com/christmas-gift-ideas-for-guitarists/): Ok, so I gather that you are here because that special someone in your life is an avid guitarist and you want to buy them something in the genre, right? One of the major problems that I have seen people have is that they are gifted items that they wouldn't otherwise use, or wouldn't suit their style of play - so I will try to give fair and well rounded advice for everyone. - [Christmas Guitar Deals](https://australianguitarreview.com/christmas-guitar-deals/): So Black Friday is now over and it's time to look forward to Christmas and the deals that may be had for your loved ones who play, or even something for yourself. I will be continuing to update this page as the month goes on and as the sales roll in, but given the Black Friday sales (and most Australian's retailers lack of involvement in them) I am not sure what will happen. I will add not only sales, but also deals and added extras. - [Black Friday Guitar Deals](https://australianguitarreview.com/black-friday-guitar-deals/): This year seems to be the year that Black Friday has really caught on in Australia, where it has traditionally been a US tradition, I have tried to round up as much as possible for Australian stores, but also have included some overseas deals as well. If you are looking for a gift for a guitar player for Xmas or for yourself this is a prime time to purchase it. Remember to check back on each of the retailers as they will often update their sales and release only certain items across the weekend, so you have to stay on your toes. - [Kink Pedals Charlie Fuzz Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/kink-pedals-charlie-fuzz-review/): I wrote a piece a little while back on Kink Guitar pedals and now have had the chance to review their Charlie Fuzz. Now, I am under no illusion and my playing can't match the playing of someone like Brett Kingman, so I will let his video demo show you how it works. - [Xvive Golden Brownie Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/xvive-golden-brownie-review/): The Xvive Golden Brownie was one of the pedals that made it into the Gear of the Year for the Guitar Nerds last year, so it has to have some chops, right? Oh yes it does! - [Featured Builder – Kink Guitar Pedals](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-kink-guitar-pedals/): Kink Guitar Pedals consists of Mark, who started as a guitar effects DIYer and eventually thought I could help fill a small gap in the market.  I have to say, that he has hit a good gap too, the affordable to mid range fuzz gap. Unfortunately, I see a lot of brands try to be too boutique and sell their fuzz or gain circuits into the hundreds of dollars, but not Kink - for a great, hand built pedal you are looking at the sub $200 mark for even the most complicated of their designs. It seems to be working too, every time that Mark puts up a batch of his pedals, it seems that they well out within the week.  - [Featured Builder – Dr Scientist](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-dr-scientist/): Ryan says that they are "cooking up two new products right now that we're really excited about.. one is a new reverb pedal since we had to retire the Reverberator last year.  I really miss having a dedicated reverb pedal in our line and we're working on a really fun replacement, something more weird and complicated and powerful.  We're also working on a new kind of expression pedal that's fun to play with.  I'm not sure if we'll finish either for 2017 but 2018 for sure!" Great to see that they are continuing to break new ground, I am especially interested in the new expressions pedal and see what that is all about. The only hint that he gave me to mire details about new products was this Instagram link... - [Artist Guitars Stratocaster review](https://australianguitarreview.com/artist-guitars-stratocaster-review/): After reviewing the Artist ES 335 and loving the quality build, I thought that I should give another of theirs a try to make sure that it wasn't a fluke. So I decided to pick a guitar that every beginner will probably want to at least consider and picked up the Artist AS20 Strat. Now this site was created to look at what we can buy here in Australia, that is quality and that is actually available, so I thought the Artist range was a great place to start. This post also forms a bigger picture of affordable gear for beginners (and/or experimenters). So without further ado, here is my opinion on this guitar. - [Gibson 2018 models](https://australianguitarreview.com/gibson-2018-models/): Another year has gone by and it is time for the yearly release of new Gibson models (again, no real idea of when they will be here in Australia). Just throwing it out there, but with guitars that are so iconic is it necessary for them to be renewing models every single year? - [EHX Green Russian Re-issue](https://australianguitarreview.com/ehx-green-russian-re-issue/): The EHX Big Muff Pi is a pedal that has probably been on most pedal boards, from the beginner to the advanced it has been a staple. Most people will also know that there have been several iterations of the pedal with a particular few hailing from Russia. The Black and, particularly Green Russian muffs have been sought after for their tonal ability - often a bit smoother than the NYC Pi. However, with many people wanting them and them being relatively limited they have become a bit of a collector's item. On Reverb you will be lucky to find a Green Russian at anything under $500, so it has come as welcome news that the Green Russian is being reissued, but in a smaller housing. There will be some differences, like the fact that they won't have traditional Russian transistors in them, but we are assured that this is a re-creation of the original. US street price is $80.60, so after import duties and exchange rate, I am assuming that these units will be around the same price as the Nano Big Muff Pi at $160. - [New: Earthquaker Devices ‘Data Corruptor’](https://australianguitarreview.com/new-earthquaker-devices-data-corruptor/): From Earthquaker Devices: - [August Guitar news](https://australianguitarreview.com/august-guitar-news/): As always there is plenty on the release radar: - [Essential Pedals](https://australianguitarreview.com/essential-pedals/): We have previously looked at how to build your first pedal board - but what actually goes on the boards of real players? This week we are looking at the essential pedals from a range of music industry pros to see what they feel are the best pedals for their play style. I think you'll actually be surprised that the vast majority of pedals are actually affordable for the beginner player (especially secondhand). - [What is: Amp in a Box](https://australianguitarreview.com/what-is-amp-in-a-box/): This series will start to look at some of the terms and concepts that new players may not be aware of and may be afraid to ask. Today, we are looking at the concept of 'Amp in a Box' - what the hell is it and why do people use them? - [Boss Katana Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/boss-katana-review/): I posted a little while back about the Boss Katana and my initial impressions about it and after spending some time with it, thought that I would make some more comments on how I see this amp. - [July Australian Guitar News](https://australianguitarreview.com/july-australian-guitar-news/): As always, this month's news will remain a live document with updates throughout the month when we hear of things being released. With Summer NAMM on the cards for the month, there is bound to be some really cool stuff released. - [June Australian Guitar News](https://australianguitarreview.com/june-australian-guitar-news/): EHX continue to be on the up and up with releases, this month with the Tone Corset compressor and now the Platform Stereo Compressor - [New EHX Battalion](https://australianguitarreview.com/new-ehx-battalion/): It seems that a month doesn't go by that EHX aren't releasing something new and cool - this week it is something for the Bassists of the world - the BATTALION - [Album Review – John Mayer – The Search for Everything](https://australianguitarreview.com/album-review-john-mayer-the-search-for-everything/): Ok, if you can get past the album art on this one it is a solid album. Regardless of what you think about John Mayer the person, he is undoubtedly one of the guitar greats of this generation. This is a really solid album, although it doesn't have any really solid pop anthems like his previous releases - like Body is a Wonderland, for example. - [Boss Katana Review- Initial Thoughts](https://australianguitarreview.com/boss-katana-review-initial-thoughts/): I picked this amp up from my friends at Guitar Brothers in Brisbane, if you are around the area I would highly recommend that you get out to Red Hill to see them. They have a great range of products and really know their stuff. The Boss Katana range has had a ton of positive press recently and I was in the market for a new practice amp, so I thought why not. I bought the Boss Katana 50 Watt, if you want one of these I would suggest that you get in quick as they are in very high demand at the moment and more than likely you will be placed on a wait list for a little while until more stock comes in..But they are definitely worth it. - [Album Review – Inter Alia – At the Drive In](https://australianguitarreview.com/album-review-inter-alia-at-the-drive-in/): Well, it's been a while before records for At the Drive In, that band of frenetic energy which split into The Mars Volta and Sparta in the early 2000's. It's been 17 years, to be precise, since the release of Relationship of Command, an album which was instrumental in my own guitar playing. - [May Guitar news](https://australianguitarreview.com/may-guitar-news/): This post will be a live document for the rest of the month, check back for updates as we get them: - [Featured Store – Artist Guitars (2026)](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-store-artist-guitars/): Last Updated: 26 February 2026 - [Featured Store – Guitar Brothers](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-store-guitar-brothers/): This week we are looking at a local Australian store - Guitar Brothers, based in Brisbane. I have come across this store both on ebay, and also on Facebook, which I highly recommend following as they update with recent acquisitions and sales. I got in contact with Craig Claxton from Guitar Brothers and he was good enough to give me some time to answer some questions around the shop and the people behind it. - [New Products Roundup](https://australianguitarreview.com/new-products-roundup/): Time for a bit of a roundup of what has been recently released, both at home and abroad. - [April Fool’s Round Up](https://australianguitarreview.com/april-fools-round-up/): April Fool's has just passed and a lot of guitar companies have released their 'Fools' products for the year. Strangely enough, I'm a little disappointed that some of these don't actually exist...Here is a bit of a roundup of what we came across this past few days, what did you find? - [Featured Builder – Loopi Pedals](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-loopi-pedals/): The last few weeks we have looked at Bondi Effects and other builders who make pedals that make noises, this week however we are looking at the complete opposite. Bryce, from Loopi Pedals, was nice enough to answer some questions about his company. A pedal that doesn't make sound you ask, is this some kind of new hipster, gluten free pedal? Nope, Loopi pedals are functional pedals, pedals that make switching easier, or tap tempo, but I'll leave it to Bryce to explain a bit more about the company. - [Featured Builder – Bondi Effects](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-bondi-effects/): Bondi has a special place in the hearts of Australians. Whether it is your local haunt, or the beach that you avoid due to it being 'too popular' that little cove holds a special part of Australia within it's rocky walls. So it is with Bondi Effects, holding a special place on the pedalboards of guitarists, also surrounded by rock. This week we are speaking to Anna and Jon Ashley from Bondi Effects for the run down on them, their company and what we should expect from them in the coming months. - [New products from EHX](https://australianguitarreview.com/new-products-from-ehx/): Since NAMM ElectroHarmonix has been killing it in the new releases. I am a big fan of EHX and it seems that they are one of the only big companies that are willing to push the envelope with new and unique products. I thought that today we could have a quick look at a few of the new products that they have either released, or will be releasing soon. - [TC Electronics Spark Mini Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/tc-electronics-spark-mini-review/): So you want to go to 11 and you don't want to take up more space on your pedalboard? Well the TC Electronics Spark Mini is the pedal for you. - [EHX Nano 360 Looper Review](https://australianguitarreview.com/ehx-nano-360-looper-review/): I was going to be influenced by the most popular sellers of last year and buy the TC Electronics Ditto Looper, but there was a few things that threw me off, most notably that I couldn't save loops between playing sessions. The EHX 360 Looper, however, allowed me to do that. The 360 stands for the fact that this looper has 360 secs of looping capacity across 11 slots. That means that you can have 11 x 36 sec loops or 1 x 360 sec loop or anything in between. - [Guitar Gods – Nick Reinhart](https://australianguitarreview.com/guitar-gods-nick-reinhart/): This new series is going to start to look at some of the great guitarists of the modern era, especially those that are a little less well known. The posts are generally going to be pretty short and will feature a video and where to find the guitarist in question, should you want to seek out more of their work. We even may be lucky enough to get some interviews in with some guitarists in the future, so fingers crossed. Feel free to comment below on other artists that you feel should be included in a future post. - [NAMM 2017 Updates](https://australianguitarreview.com/namm-2017-updates/): NAMM (the National Association of Music Merchants) is one of, if not the, biggest musical gear and tech shows in the world. Unfortunately, NAMM doesn't come to Australia and given that this is the place where all the latest releases are announced, I will be trying to keep up with some of the major players over the next few days, probably across a few posts. - [Roland NAMM 2017 Conference](https://australianguitarreview.com/roland-namm-2017-conference/): I had a chance to watch the live stream of the Roland releases for the year and here is what we learned. Roland cover a few different genres, however we will be sticking with just the guitar side of things. This is the 45th year of Roland Boss and they say that we are in for big things, this year 'Unleashed' is the motto of the presentation. - [The best selling effects of 2016](https://australianguitarreview.com/the-best-selling-effects-of-2016/): It is 2017 and probably time to look back on the year that was and the big sellers of 2016, we will look at a couple of sources for what was popular, starting with Amazon. - [The 2017 buying list](https://australianguitarreview.com/the-2017-buying-list/): So, as with many guitar players, I always have a list of things that I am working towards whether it be getting a different tone, nailing a part or simply doing it just because. I have been afflicted with Gear Acquisition Syndrome and this year is no different to any other, I will buy, swap and trade my way to finding the best tone for me. Below is my list of things that I am working towards this year, some new stuff and some stuff that has been on the market for years. - [Featured Builder – Pelican Noiseworks](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-pelican-noiseworks/): After a brief hiatus for the Christmas period, we are back again with a new featured builder - Leon of Pelican Noiseworks. Sure, not an Australian company, but a small business with a product that is now available in Australia (Pedal Empire).  Leon and Pelican first came to my attention through the 60 Cycle Hum and Guitar Nerds podcasts which he is an active member of the communities, Leon struck me as a guy who does this for the love and not the money, which became more obvious after he answered some questions about the company. - [Melbourne Guitar Stores](https://australianguitarreview.com/melbourne-guitar-stores/): I had a short work trip to Melbourne this past week and was lucky enough to check out some guitar shops in the area, and I have to say I was pretty impressed by what was on offer. Unfortunately, I don't have a great deal of access to good music shops, which is a frustration, so a trip to Melbourne really puts things straight for me. - [Featured Builder – Stringjoy](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-stringjoy/): Over the past few installments, I have focussed on Australian builders, but this week I decided to have a look at something different. Stringjoy is a company that I have heard about a lot recently through the 60 cycle Hum podcast and through Instagram posts, and I thought that I would get in contact. Now, a lot of buyers tend to look for the USA made products, which usually come with the extra quality that the extra checks and balances buys, whether it be a Gibson Les Paul, a Fender MIA strat, or an original NYC Muff. This is where Stringjoy fits in, an American builder in the USA, with all the quality that you can assume comes with that. Scott from Stringjoy was kind enough to answer some questions that I had about his products. - [TC Electronics new range](https://australianguitarreview.com/tc-electronics-new-range/): In an industry where we are usually drip fed new products by companies TC Electronics have gone way out and released a whole series of new pedals just in time for some summer gear buying. The Smorgasboard of Tones has been announced (and released) and contains some really cool looking pedals - including an analog delay. From what I can tell, the pedals have been released in the UK and US so far (available on Andertons) but still to get details on when they will be available in Australia. TC are known for their great quality pedals and it seems that, with these pedals, they are trying to fill the gap that sits between cheap Chinese knock offs and clones and the regular priced BOSS/EHX/TC models. Given this, if they are of similar quality I can imagine that they will be landing on a of pedal boards in coming years as standard, especially for new players that don't want super cheap, but quality pedals. - [Featured Builder – Anarchy Audio](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-anarchy-audio/): It’s time for us to look at another of the awesome Australian builders, last time it was Ormsby Guitars, so this time we are looking at effects - particularly Anarchy Audio. I had the opportunity to do an email interview with Johannes from Anarchy on his thoughts on the industry and how he got started. The Australian industry is such a small one and I saw that Anarchy has a lot to do with Ormsby. - [How to buy a guitar without knowing how to play](https://australianguitarreview.com/how-to-buy-a-guitar-without-knowing-how-to-play/): It's a common story - you want to learn how to play guitar but when you think about going into the store to try out anything it fills you with dread. What will people think of you if you go into a guitar shop and don't know how to play at all? I am making the assumption that you don't have access to playing others' guitars and that you are new to music playing. - [Building your first pedal board](https://australianguitarreview.com/building-your-first-pedal-board/): So you have bought your first guitar and amp and now you are looking for a few more ways to change and improve your playing. The next step is obviously pedals! Some people will recommend playing without pedals for the first year, until you are really comfortable with the fret board, timing and your guitar in general, but where is the fun in that? Seriously, if you are passionate about playing and you want to be getting the same tones as some of your favourite players, you will need some pedals to get you there. We have previously looked at where to buy your pedals on the site. I would recommend that you look at second hand pedals as well, brands like Boss are very well known for being built like a tank. Most pedals are made for stomping on stage, so they are likely to stand up to a bit of use before they give in. - [Featured Builder – Ormsby Guitars](https://australianguitarreview.com/featured-builder-ormsby-guitars/): Ormsby Guitars is one of the very few Australian owned and built electric guitars. Given, Australia does have a few makers when it comes to the acoustic side of things, but on the electric side there are very few. This website was created to both support and explore the Australian guitar buying, building and repairing industry, so I thought that Ormsby would be one of the best places to start. If you have any further suggestions of other companies that we should cover, please let us know in the comments. - [Fender Offsets NAMM 2016](https://australianguitarreview.com/fender-offsets-namm-2016/): I thought that it would only be fair to look at the new range that Fender will be releasing, considering that we have previously looked at the 2017 Gibson models. The new models come in the Duo - Sonic and the Mustang and from the video above come in a whole series of configurations, from splittable humbuckers to P90s. There are some cool new colours as well, with the Olive green, Orange and what looks like a washed out Seafoam Green. They are all shorter scale guitars, which are a bit of a drawback for me, although that is just a personal opinion, I find that the shortened scale can be a little cramped. It looks like these guitars will also be quite reasonably priced (maybe <$1000AUD), but it is always a waiting game, along with when they will actually hit Australian shelves. - [Australian Guitar Stores](https://australianguitarreview.com/australian-guitar-stores/): Unfortunately, with the advent of online shopping and cheap shipping from overseas, the Australian local music market has suffered somewhat. Wheres places like the States have Guitar Centre and other chain stores, there is little in that way in Australia, especially when it comes to purchasing instruments. Below we have tried to list some of the bigger and more reputable stores that are in Australia for you to look at and purchase from. - [Muff Showdown – Big Muff Pi vs Nano Big Muff Pi](https://australianguitarreview.com/muff-showdown-big-muff-pi-vs-nano-big-muff-pi/): A photo posted by Australian Guitar Review (@australian_guitar_review) on Sep 19, 2016 at 5:41pm PDT ## Pages - [Home](https://australianguitarreview.com/): Honest reviews, builder profiles, buying guides and gear news for Australian players - [Australian Wood Hardness and Weight Calculator](https://australianguitarreview.com/wood-hardness-and-weight-calculator/): Look up Janka hardness ratings (kN) and estimate the weight of your woodworking project - [Contact](https://australianguitarreview.com/contact/): Our staff would love to hear from you - [About Us](https://australianguitarreview.com/about-2/): Augue neque gravida in fermentum et sollicitudin ac orci. Unfortunately, being geographically isolated sometimes means that we see the releases, but not the products.  What is 'standard' in the US is often unavailable or highly priced, Australian Guitar review aims to bridge the gap and provide the information that the guitarist needs to make an informed, and primarily local decision on the purchase of their instrument and accessories.
